What we do
Financial support
Friends of Madurai Seed supports Madurai Seed through guaranteed annual funding that is used for the following:
Learning Centres – so that the children acquire better learning skills
There are four Learning Centres where the children are grouped by age and are helped with their school work and homework by the volunteer teachers. The infrastructure is partly subsidized through funding from Friends of Madurai Seed. Thanks to these classes operating alongside their regular state school classes, the children perform much better in school generally, and in particular in the annual state school examinations. Especially important is the focus on a holistic approach that helps to develop personal as well as academic skills in the children.
The Madurai Seed Library – encouraging having pleasure in learning
Karumbalai does not have a public library. In order to promote the children’s reading skills and their active interest in the world around them, Madurai Seed has established its own library with books for all age levels. Every child is encouraged to read outside school hours, and there are also regular guest events with talks on topics of interest.
Personal development – equipping children for the future
Madurai Seed not only aims to help its children and young people educationally but also socially, by developing their social competences and personality. Using a holistic approach, it helps to prepare them comprehensively for their adult lives through a range of workshops, seminars, excursions, social events, museum visits and so on.
Moral and practical support
Friends of Madurai Seed also gives moral support to the staff at Madurai Seed and acts as a consultation partner regarding important planning decisions, in a dialogue that helps the best solutions to be found. As the teaching is undertaken by volunteers, Friends of Madurai Seed actively helps to develop their teaching skills and competences. To this end, Laura Villiger Potts and John Potts, very experienced teachers and teacher trainers, run regular teacher development workshops for the Madurai Seed volunteers and staff.
